UNIX Support Policy
Department of Psychology, UCSD
updated 4-26-01

In order to provide conformance with recommendations received from the recent Internal Audit, and to protect the security and integrity of the departmental and campus network, the Psychology Computer Committee is asking departmental faculty, staff, and graduate students to adhere to the following policy regarding UNIX-based computers:

  1. Any Department member wishing to run a UNIX machine on the Psychology network will need to notify the Departmental Network Manager (DNM) before the machine is purchased.

  2. Once the machine is purchased, if it is to be connected to the Psychology network, it will need to follow the security and maintenance policies established by the DNM and the Computer Committee, and approved by the Audit Team. This means that before it can be hooked up to the network, it will need to be demonstrated to the DNM that the machine adheres to the departmental "security checklist" and any security policies set by the DNM and the Computer Committee. In addition, security maintenance on the machine will need to be ongoing as long as the machine is connected to the Psychology network, according to the above policies.

  3. Each faculty member will need to provide for their own systems administrator for installation and ongoing support of any new UNIX machines, whether they are connected to the network or not. Departmental computing support personnel will not be able to provide support for these machines. Identification of the systems administrator for each UNIX system, with their name and contact information conveyed to the DNM, will need to be taken care of before the machine is purchased. The faculty member is solely responsible for the financial arrangements regarding support of the systems admin.

  4. Each machine's individual systems administrator is responsible for keeping the machine at full patch levels, and for informing the DNM of all software, particularly network software, running on the machine.

  5. The DNM has the right to root (superuser) access to all machines within the Psychology Department's network. Root password, and in some cases, a regular user account, will need to be given to the DNM for all UNIX machines in case of a security breach or other emergency.
Any questions regarding these policies can be directed towards the Computer Committee members, the MSO, or the DNM.
